Ayatul Kursi is the name of the largest Quran in the Malayalam language. It is a collection of approximately 23,000 verses and has been divided into six parts. The Ayat ul Kursi is considered to be supreme in authority by Muslims all over the world just next to al-Qur'an itself.The inspiration for this work came from his desire to know what Muslims in India were reciting during prayers and at religious schools and colleges and also about their understanding and appreciation of it. There was only an old Arabic manuscript of the Quran in existence in Kerala and that too at a large distance from Malabar. The manuscript was used as a source book during the annual Qurr session conducted by the Ulu Thalam Valiyas, Pettah, at Mundakkal, Calicut.The actual date of foundation of the work is not known. Probably it may have been made between AD 1340 and AD 1353. The first Ayatul Kursi which is written by Paremmakkal Thoma Kathanar was completed, according to the information given by the author in the introduction, AD 1340. It was revised and enlarged AD 1353 and AD 1300. The last revision was made AD 1303 which brought the history up to AD 1301.The entire work consists of six Ayatuls, each annotated with marginal notes and references to other relevant texts. The six Ayatuls are: the first consisting of 4,000 verses mostly from Sura al-Fa'riyat and comprising also a few parts from other Suras; the second consisting of a group of 1,973 verses from Sura Shura; the third consisting of 2,727 verses from Sura al-Hadid; the fourth consisting of 3,236 verses from Sura al-Mu'minun; the fifth consisting of 514 verses, only two instances being cited from other suras and namely at. 53 & 108. The sixth consisting of 210 verses from Sura al-Nisa. The total number of verses is 20,638, of which 1,850 are from other suras.Though the Ayatul Kursi was written over a period of several years, it is not an edited work. The first part was written by itself and the remaining parts were added later by others. It seems that the first section was compiled at a time when an Arabic copy was not available for use as a source book and perhaps it may have been combined with old traditions which existed among Muslims in Malabar.
